June 1st Highlights ...

Bishop Hanson, the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, led the second ballot for synodical bishop.  After a "Mission Moment" concerning Mission Interpreters, Bishop Hanson again took on the role of being the keynote speaker and spoke about the stewardship of our name.

We are Evangelical - gospel centered.  We are called to be evangelical in a Lutheran key.  "We need to quit defining ourselves by saying what we are not," Bishop Hanson declared.  "We need to be evangelical in our daily lives."

We are Lutheran.  The question, Bishop Hanson asked the community, is "does that make us a "protesting" (i.e., Protestant church) or as a reforming evangelical catholic expression of the whole church."

We are Church.  "We confess that we believe in one holy, catholic, apostolic church," said Bishop Hanson.  "Unity is not the same as uniformity."

We are "in America."  As a denomination, we are a homogeneous group in a very diverse world.

The assembly then addressed many of the resolutions (a record number of 17 resolutions were submitted to the synod assembly).  The voting results on the resolutions can be found on the Resolutions Page.

The results of the second ballot were announced and the names of the eight candidates who received the most votes were listed on the third ballot.  The afternoon began with the synod staff report, including highlights of the last year of synodical ministry and the vision of ministry for the future.  Bishop Paul Blom, Pastor Rob Moore (Assistant to the Bishop for Outreach and Communications - pictured to the left), Peggy Contos Hahn (Assistant to the Bishop for Youth & Family Ministry - pictured to the right), Pastor Liz Stein (Director of Leadership), and Pastor Dave Morrell (Director of the Call Process) all gave reports.  Nancy Froelich introduced the synod budget for 2008 which was voted on and passed.

After hearing a short talk from the eight candidates for bishop, the assembly entered into a time of prayer.  The third ballot was then taken for bishop.  The three people who received the highest number of votes were then added to the fourth ballot.   Voting members and visitors then had the opportunity to speak with the three final candidates (in three separate rooms).

The assembly then met as a whole as the Camp Lutherhill Corporation Board.  Evan Molan, Director of Lutherhill, and Lauri Tokoi, Board President, gave a very positive and encouraging report of the growing ministry of Camp Lutherhill.  It was reported that over 1900 children had life changing experiences through the ministry of Lutherhill in 2006 - and approximately 2500 children in 2007.  The new board members were then installed as part of the corporation report.

The day ended with a wonderful banquet honoring Bishop Blom and his staff.
