June 1st Highlights ...Bishop Hanson, the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, led the second ballot for synodical bishop. After a "Mission Moment" concerning Mission Interpreters, Bishop Hanson again took on the role of being the keynote speaker and spoke about the stewardship of our name.
We are Lutheran. The question, Bishop Hanson asked the community, is "does that make us a "protesting" (i.e., Protestant church) or as a reforming evangelical catholic expression of the whole church."
We are Church. "We confess that we believe in one holy, catholic, apostolic church," said Bishop Hanson. "Unity is not the same as uniformity."
We are "in America." As a denomination, we are a homogeneous group in a very diverse world.
The assembly then addressed many of the resolutions (a record number of 17 resolutions were submitted to the synod assembly). The voting results on the resolutions can be found on the Resolutions Page.
After hearing a short talk from the eight candidates for bishop, the assembly entered into a time of prayer. The third ballot was then taken for bishop. The three people who received the highest number of votes were then added to the fourth ballot. Voting members and visitors then had the opportunity to speak with the three final candidates (in three separate rooms).
The day ended with a wonderful banquet honoring Bishop Blom and his staff. Return to 2007 Synod Assembly Page
