The Border in Crisis and Houston Responds: an Educational Forum

Opening Reception: Friday, Sept. 20, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Aurora Studios and Gallery, 129 Aurora, in the Heights. “The Power of Hope: Refuge Art Reflections,” a traveling art exhibit, will be presented. The Rev. Dr. Helen Boursier of San Antonio worked with mothers and children held at the Karnes Family Detention Center in 2015 -2016 and helped them explore—through art– the trauma that they suffered while in detention. Rev. Boursier will speak, and there will be a silent auction of donated works by local artists in support of Team Brownsville and the Interfaith Welcome Coalition (IWC) in San Antonio. Wine and cheese will be served.
Educational Forum: Saturday, Sept. 21, from 8:30 am to 2 pm at Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire. Keynote speaker: Hope Frye, immigration attorney from San Francisco and co-founder of Project Lifeline, who will share what she has witnessed at detention centers, including Tornillo and Homestead, and her work seeking to implement the Flores Agreement which governs children being held in detention.
Program: Panel of experts will discuss the reasons people flee their home countries for the US, the reasons many attempt to bypass legal channels, and the current status of asylum seekers re the MPP and metering policies. Several persons who have been affected by this will be present to share their experiences. Finally, area groups will discuss how we can join them in making a difference in the lives of asylum seekers, here in Houston and on the Texas border.
