Ecumenical Prayer Service – Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 23 @ 7:00 pm

They Showed Us Unusual Kindness (Acts 28:2)
7th Annual Ecumenical Prayer Service, January 23, 7 p.m. Christ the King Lutheran Church

Churches in and around Houston come together every year in January in vibrant prayer and witness for Christian unity, recalling one of Jesus’ central prayers for the body of Christ, “that they may all be one.” The invitation comes from the International Committee of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

This year’s theme was issued by the churches on the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea, the island where possibly the Apostle Paul landed shipwrecked and was wonderfully rescued and welcomed. Again, in recent years, the islands and coastal nations of the Mediterranean have rescued and welcomed refugees, many thousands. Combining our Christian calling of welcoming the stranger, caring for the stranded, and extending our hand, with our prayer for unity, churches in Houston pray for unity and focus again on what it means to extend unusual kindness to the lost and stranded in our own time. The ecumenical International Houston Seafarers Center will participate in the service. The port of Houston is one of the world’s largest ports, the busiest U.S. export port and welcomes thousands of seamen every year.

The central event of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be the Ecumenical Prayer Service, hosted at Christ the King Lutheran Church in the Rice Village, 2353 Rice Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77005, on January 23 at 7 p.m.
