The mission of Lutherans Restoring Creation is to promote incorporation of care for creation into the full life and mission of the church, working in five areas: worship, education, discipleship, building & grounds, and public ministry/advocacy. For some timely information in these areas, see below:

Worship

Check out this liturgy on creation care. Attend the online youth-led closing service for the season of creation on Oct. 4.  Fall is a great time to plant trees.  Use this tree planting liturgy for your planting event. A new creation-focused prayer is posted each week. Creation-focused commentaries on the lectionary are available from a Lutheran source.

Education

Join Nature Solutions: The Hidden Gifts of Fungi & Native Plants online on Oct. 26. Learn how your voice can make a difference for clean water in Clean Water in Action: Advocacy Through the Permitting Process online on Oct. 5. Learn how to reduce your household carbon footprint & create a plan for a 50% reduction by 2030 in Living the Change.  Not sure how human society can effectively address climate change?  You can find out in Drawdown Roadmap online on Thursdays, Oct. 21 – Nov. 13. For youth, consider Understanding Creation Care in Everyday Contexts as an educational offering.

Discipleship

Share these “Bulletin blurb” eco-tips (+ verses & quotes) with your congregation. Experience spirituality in nature in the Via Creationis: Walking the Way of Creation in Hermann Park in Houston on Oct. 18 or Nov 1. Join the Lutherans Restoring Creation – Gulf Coast team for the People’s Ecochallenge online throughout October to live out your faith.  Create a devotional playlist using materials from A Creation Liturgy. Consider how micro-retreats can enhance your spiritual life.

Building & Grounds

Learn How to Become a Cool Congregation online on Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. Done great things to care for creation?  You could win a prize. Apply for the American Climate Leadership Awards 2026. Learn how to reduce your energy bills in Energy for Purpose. Public Ministry/Advocacy

The weekly-updated Opportunities to Care for, Learn About, and Enjoy Nature features volunteer events in the greater Houston area.  Commit to advocacy on climate policy in The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities on Tuesdays, Oct. 21 – Nov. 11. Bring a group to the Interfaith Environmental Stewardship Event on Oct. 12 in Willow Waterhole Greenspace in Houston.  Join the Lutherans Restoring Creation bike team for Bike Around the Bay (10/18 & 10/19 in Galveston/Baytown) or the Park to Port ride (10/25 in Houston).  A new eco-justice advocacy opportunity is posted on the synod team’s website each week.


October & Early November Creation Care Events
