food pantry 1Each year on Super Bowl Sunday, the Lutheran Church of the Galilean in La Place, LA participates in the “Souper Bowl of Caring”. This year the membership collected non-perishable food items and money donations for two different agencies, St. John Ministry of Care and ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

Each year the church has members donate towards their favorite Super Bowl team.

In addition to the membership donations, they also had $250 from the Thrivent Financial  “Action Team” program.  Thrivent’s Action Team program empowers individual members to lead a team to address an unmet need within their community.  With those funds the Lutheran Church of the Galilean was able to purchase the following additional items – 56 boxes of cereal and 135 cans of canned meats.  These items went to the St. John Ministry of Care to help restock their food bank, which was low in these type items.

According to chairperson, Carl Hilt, this was “the best Souper Bowl of Caring ever for the congregation” –  336 items of non-perishable foods, $129 in money donations, and 318 pounds of food were donated to the St. John Ministry of Care.
